From a college adventure to a life here
Justin Martinez came to Colorado in 2002 to attend the University of Colorado Boulder. What began as a college adventure quickly became a lifelong commitment to the state he came to love. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Economics from CU Boulder and went on to earn a master’s degree in Economics from Colorado State University.
After graduate school, Justin began his career as an economist at the Denver Regional Council of Governments, where he developed a passion for regional planning, transportation, and local government. Today, he works as a software engineer, bringing an analytical, practical, and problem-solving approach to his work and public service.
Building a life in Thornton
Along the way, Justin married his high school sweetheart, Susie. Together, they have built their life in Thornton and are raising their two daughters. Justin has called Colorado home for more than twenty-four years, and Thornton has become the community where his family has put down roots.

Protecting Thornton’s future
Justin was elected to Thornton City Council in 2023. Since taking office, he has focused on protecting Thornton’s future, strengthening residents’ voices in local government, and making sure the city’s growth works for the people who live here.
He has also worked collaboratively with leaders across the region and throughout the country. Justin serves on the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) Board of Directors, chairs the North Area Transportation Alliance (NATA), and serves on the National League of Cities’ Information Technology and Communications Federal Advisory Committee.
